Too easily obsessed with early cinema and darkrooms late at night, I came to realize that I was a poorly designed architecture student and that I should shift my attention to other, more purely visual studies. Some time later, on the opposite edge of the country, I began working as an assistant for professional photographers in Los Angeles.

In 1984, having assisted and apprenticed with commercial photographers in Dallas, I began my freelance career in my own studio, specializing in large format photography and still life photography. I enjoyed many years of success in Texas, working with a variety of clients on assignments which included retail and catalog newspaper ads, retail image mailers, jewelry photography, hotel campaigns, and a range of editorial projects: still life, portrait and photo-illustration.

In 1999, my wife and partner, Beth, and I relocated our business to Portland, Maine where the studio is now a part of our 1889 Victorian home.

Our studio offers creative advertising photography in both film and digital media. We bring to our pictures a careful eye for composition and an imaginative touch for styling. More importantly, we bring a willing mind for listening and communicating with our clients-- both those who are able to attend and direct their shoots, and those who are not, who instead rely on a broader range of our services and resources. Many images shown here are examples of this kind of long distance collaboration, e.g. Italian Shoes, Men's Fashion, and Fine Jewelry in our Projects section.

Concepts arrive at our studio in various forms. Some have many words; some have few. Some are tightly planned; many loosely sketched. Working creatively, using dialogue, imagination and experience, we help ideas emerge--fashioning words into pictures.
